Martian Manhunter #5

Martian Manhunter #5 was released in 1999 as part of the character's second self-titled limited series, written by John Ostrander with art by Tom Mandrake. This series was instrumental in re-establishing J'onn J'onzz as a central figure in the DC Universe, moving away from his historical role as a background player in the Justice League to explore his complex psychological duality as both a Martian refugee and a man of Earth. Ostrander focused heavily on the character's internal philosophy, framing him as a detective and a survivor with a distinct moral compass.

The design of the series leaned into a darker, more atmospheric aesthetic characteristic of the late nineties DC aesthetic. Tom Mandrake, known for his work on The Spectre, utilized heavy shadows and emotive character designs to emphasize the loneliness of the last Martian. The title received positive critical reception for its mature tone and its success in elevating the character's solo mythos, distinguishing it from the more traditional superhero adventures found in other contemporary DC comics.
