Martian Manhunter: American Secrets #1

Martian Manhunter: American Secrets #1 was published by DC Comics in 1992 as a three-issue prestige format limited series. Set in the 1950s, the story shifts the character away from his typical superhero context to explore a noir-inspired mystery involving Cold War paranoia and alien abduction conspiracies. The series was written by Gerard Jones and illustrated by Eduardo Barreto, who utilized a moody, atmospheric aesthetic to capture the tension of the era.

The creative team aimed to ground J'onn J'onzz in the mid-century American experience, leaning into the contrast between his extraterrestrial nature and the xenophobia of the time. Upon its release, the series was received as a stylistic departure for the character, praised by critics for its thematic depth and its departure from standard cape-and-cowl tropes in favor of investigative storytelling.
