Where it came from
Marvel Comics Presents #123 was published in early 1993 as part of a long-running anthology series designed to showcase various characters from across the Marvel Universe in serialized, bite-sized stories. This specific issue is best known for featuring a segment of the 'Ghost Rider/Wolverine/Punisher: Hearts of Darkness' storyline, a high-octane crossover that leveraged the immense popularity of these three gritty anti-heroes during a period when dark, violent narratives dominated the industry.
The creative direction of this era was heavily influenced by the 'grim and gritty' aesthetic of the 1990s, with dynamic, muscle-bound illustrations that prioritized kinetic energy. The issue includes work by creators like Howard Mackie and Sam Kieth, who were tasked with maintaining the momentum of the crossover. It was received by readers as a quintessential piece of 90s Marvel lore, reflecting the experimental, multi-part storytelling format that the publisher utilized to keep fans engaged across weekly releases.
