Marvel Graphic Novel #17

Marvel Graphic Novel #17, titled Revenge of the Living Monolith, was released by Marvel Comics in 1985 as part of their prestige-format graphic novel line. This series was designed to showcase high-quality, standalone storytelling that moved beyond the traditional monthly pamphlet format, allowing creators more room for experimentation and expansive narrative arcs. The initiative sought to elevate the perceived maturity and artistic merit of comic books by focusing on larger trim sizes and heavier paper stock.

The issue was written by David Michelinie with artwork by Herb Trimpe. Michelinie utilized the platform to weave together established Marvel continuity, pitting the X-Men against the Living Monolith in a story that tapped into the grand, cosmic scale popular in 1980s superhero fiction. While not considered the most groundbreaking title in the series, the book serves as a representative example of Marvel's mid-decade push to transition its most recognizable characters into the graphic novel format to reach a more dedicated collector audience.
