Marvel Graphic Novel #18

Marvel Graphic Novel #18, published in 1985, features the story 'The Sensational She-Hulk' written and illustrated by John Byrne. This entry in the Marvel Graphic Novel line was part of a prestigious trade paperback series designed to showcase more mature or experimental storytelling outside of the standard monthly comic book format. By mid-decade, Marvel used this line to provide creators with larger canvases to tell self-contained tales, allowing Byrne to define the character's voice through a blend of action and meta-fictional humor.

John Byrne's approach to She-Hulk in this issue is widely regarded as a pivotal moment for the character, shifting her tone toward the self-aware, fourth-wall-breaking style that later defined her most popular solo series. The creative choice to lean into the character’s personality rather than purely traditional heroics was well-received by readers at the time, establishing a template for the character that persists in modern media today.
