Marvel Tales Starring Spider-Man #196

Marvel Tales was a long-running reprint series published by Marvel Comics, designed to reintroduce classic storylines to a new generation of readers. Issue #196, released in February 1987, serves as a quintessential example of this format, primarily functioning to reprint Amazing Spider-Man #212, which originally appeared in 1981. This practice allowed Marvel to maximize the value of their back catalog while providing fans with accessible entry points into the web-slinger's extensive history.

The core narrative featured in this issue was written by Dennis O'Neil and illustrated by John Romita Jr., a powerhouse creative pairing during the early 1980s. The story features Spider-Man contending with the threat of Hydro-Man, a character whose elemental powers posed a distinct visual and tactical challenge. Romita Jr.'s dynamic, kinetic approach to panel layout and character movement helped define the aesthetic of the era, making this reprint a favored item for those who appreciate the transition between the bronze and modern ages of comic book art.
