Marvel Zombies: War Zone #1

Marvel Zombies: War Zone #1, published in 2008, serves as part of the broader Marvel Zombies expansion that emerged following the massive success of Robert Kirkman’s original limited series. Set within the grim landscape of an Earth overrun by a hunger-driven undead version of the Avengers, this issue was crafted to explore the consequences of the viral outbreak across different corners of the Marvel Universe. It functions as a grim expansion of a premise that subverted traditional superhero morality by placing familiar icons in roles of predatory antagonists.

The issue features creative work by writer Fred Van Lente and artist Alessandro Vitti, who sought to maintain the visceral, horror-focused tone established by their predecessors. The series was designed to showcase how various Marvel heroes attempted to cope—or failed to cope—with the collapse of civilization, focusing on character-driven tragedy amidst the gore. Upon release, it was received as a solid addition to the expanding 'Zombiverse' canon, appreciated by readers for its ability to balance intense horror tropes with the established dynamics of the Marvel mythos.
