Where it came from
Metal Hurlant #1 was published in Paris in December 1974, founded by Jean Giraud (Moebius), Philippe Druillet, Jean-Pierre Dionnet, and Bernard Farkas under the umbrella of Les Humanoïdes Associés. The magazine emerged from a desire to break away from the constraints of traditional, family-oriented French comics, instead offering a radical, adult-focused venue for science fiction, surrealism, and experimental storytelling.
The inaugural issue signaled a seismic shift in the medium, blending high-concept fantasy with provocative, often gritty visual narratives. The aesthetic direction was deeply influenced by the avant-garde sensibilities of its founders, particularly Giraud’s intricate line work and Druillet’s grand, cosmic architecture. Upon release, the magazine was recognized as a breakthrough in European comics, eventually paving the way for the international anthology Heavy Metal.
