My Ex-Husband's Mad Dog #1

My Ex-Husband's Mad Dog #1 emerged from the late 1990s independent comics scene, a period defined by a surge in self-published, idiosyncratic titles that favored dark humor and personal narratives over traditional superhero tropes. Created by cartoonist Carol Lay, the series utilized a signature satirical lens to explore the complexities and absurdities of modern relationships and domestic frustrations. The inaugural issue was designed to capture a biting, observational tone that resonated with readers looking for an alternative to mainstream fare.

The visual style of the series is rooted in the underground comix tradition, characterized by expressive, fluid line work and a focus on comedic timing through panel layout. Lay, an accomplished illustrator known for her work in various alternative weeklies and anthologies, utilized the medium to critique societal expectations through the lens of her eccentric characters. Upon its release, the series garnered a modest but dedicated following, praised by critics for its sharp wit and its ability to turn mundane relationship grievances into memorable, darkly comic vignettes.
