Where it came from
Mystique & Sabretooth #2 was published in 1996 as part of a four-issue limited series produced by Marvel Comics. The series was designed to explore the complex, violent history of two of the X-Men franchise's most prominent antagonists, focusing on their recurring partnership and tumultuous personal dynamic in the shadow of the Weapon X program. The story functions as both a character study and an action-oriented espionage narrative set within the broader X-Men universe.
The creative team for this miniseries featured writer Jorge González and artist Duncan Rouleau. Rouleau's visual style during this period is characterized by the high-energy, stylized aesthetic common to 1990s comic book illustration, emphasizing dynamic character poses and gritty atmospheric textures. The series was received as a typical example of the era's focus on anti-hero narratives, serving to flesh out the backstories of secondary characters who had gained significant fan interest through their appearances in the flagship X-Men titles.
