Neko ni Naritai Tamagawa-kun #2

Neko ni Naritai Tamagawa-kun is a manga series created by the artist Koji Aihara, originally serialized in the late 1980s. The work emerged during a period when Aihara was establishing his reputation for surreal, absurdist humor, often subverting the typical tropes found in mainstream manga of the era. The series focuses on the titular protagonist, Tamagawa-kun, and his eccentric desire to transform into a cat, serving as a vehicle for the author's dry and often cynical brand of comedy.

The second volume continues the idiosyncratic narrative established in the first, featuring Aihara’s distinct, sketch-like illustration style. As with much of the artist's early catalog, the design prioritizes a minimalist aesthetic that places the emphasis on the characters' bizarre existential dilemmas rather than intricate world-building. Upon release, the series was received by critics as a niche but significant contribution to the underground gag manga movement, valued by collectors for its role in showcasing the darker, more unconventional side of late Showa-era creative output.
