Where it came from
Published in 1971 as part of Jack Kirby’s Fourth World saga for DC Comics, New Gods #4 serves as a pivotal installment in the cosmic mythology Kirby introduced after departing Marvel. This issue, titled 'The Glory Boat,' focuses on the intricate power dynamics between Orion and his father, Darkseid, while expanding the philosophical conflict between the celestial realms of New Genesis and Apokolips.
Kirby both wrote and illustrated this issue, utilizing his signature 'Kirby Krackle' visual style and dense, operatic storytelling to convey the grand scale of his alien pantheon. While the New Gods series was initially met with mixed commercial success due to its radical departure from traditional superhero tropes, it has since been canonized as a masterwork of comic book storytelling and a definitive demonstration of Kirby's creative autonomy.
