Where it came from
New Mutants: Truth or Death #1 was released in 1997 as part of a three-issue prestige format limited series. Following the conclusion of the original New Mutants run years prior, Marvel Comics revisited these characters to provide a standalone narrative that bridged their past and future, serving as a nostalgic touchpoint for readers who had followed the team since their inception in the 1980s.
The series was written by Ben Raab with artwork by Leandro Fernandez. The creative team aimed to explore the psychological weight of the characters' shared history, specifically focusing on the legacy of the original students. The design and visual storytelling reflected the grit of late-90s comic aesthetics while maintaining the thematic core of the mutant experience, and it was generally received by fans as a reflective character study within the broader X-Men canon.
