Where it came from
Okinawa de Suki ni Natta Ko ga Hōgen Sugite Tsura Sugiru, commonly known as OkiTsura, began as a series of popular illustrations and manga sketches by creator Egumi Sora on social media platform Twitter. The series centers on a protagonist who moves to Okinawa and falls in love with a local girl, only to find the Okinawan dialect, or Uchinaaguchi, so thick and expressive that it creates a charming barrier to their communication. The narrative relies on this linguistic friction to deliver its romantic comedy elements, highlighting the cultural nuances of the region.
The physical publication of the series, including volume 11, serves to collect these serialized moments into a cohesive reading experience. Egumi Sora’s art style is characterized by expressive character designs and a lighthearted, comedic tone that emphasizes the protagonist's frequent confusion and heartfelt reactions to the heroine. The series has been well-regarded by readers for its lighthearted exploration of regional Japanese culture and the way it handles the evolution of the couple's relationship amidst the language gap.
