Where it came from
One-Punch Man, or Yī Quán Chāorén, originated as a self-published webcomic by the artist known as ONE in 2009. The series centers on Saitama, a hero so powerful that he can defeat any adversary with a single punch, leading to a profound sense of existential boredom. This satirical take on the superhero and shōnen manga genres quickly gained a massive online following for its subversion of traditional protagonist tropes.
The professional manga adaptation, illustrated by Yusuke Murata, began serialization on the Tonari no Young Jump website in 2012. Issue #36 is part of the ongoing digital serialization process, where Murata’s highly dynamic, cinematic art style transformed ONE’s rough sketches into a visually complex spectacle. The collaboration has been critically acclaimed for balancing intense, large-scale action sequences with the deadpan humor inherent in Saitama’s character design.
