Where it came from
Oz #12 was published in 1994 by Arrow Comics as part of an ambitious, mature-themed reimagining of L. Frank Baum’s classic literary universe. The series sought to deconstruct the whimsical nature of the original novels, recasting the Land of Oz through a dark, gritty lens that resonated with the trend of revisionist storytelling prevalent in the independent comic book market of the 1990s.
The visual language of the issue draws upon the dark fantasy aesthetic common to the era, focusing on atmospheric world-building and character redesigns intended to modernize the franchise for an older readership. While the series faced the inherent challenges of subverting a beloved childhood classic, it remains a notable example of the experimental nature of the mid-nineties comic industry, characterized by its bold departure from the tone of the source material.
