Paul Foran #1, published in 1973 by the Belgian publisher Éditions des Archers, emerged from the robust tradition of European franco-belge adventure comics. The series was created by writer José Larraz and illustrator Jordi Bernet, who sought to blend the tropes of supernatural horror with the hard-boiled aesthetic of international espionage. This debut issue established the titular character as a globe-trotting investigator often entangled in occult conspiracies, reflecting the mid-seventies fascination with pulp-style mystery and darker, more mature storytelling themes within the comic medium.
