Peter Parker: Spider-Man #42

Published in 2002, Peter Parker: Spider-Man #42 was part of a transitional period for the wall-crawler's titles. Written by Paul Jenkins with interior art by Mark Buckingham, the issue arrived during a time when the character's core narratives were balancing grounded, character-driven storytelling with the high-stakes action expected of the franchise. It serves as a middle chapter in the broader 'A Death in the Family' arc, where the creative team explored themes of grief and responsibility.

The design and artistic direction by Mark Buckingham are notable for their expressive, fluid style, which provided a distinct visual identity compared to the more traditional house style of the era. The cover art, featuring the titular character in a subdued, contemplative composition, reflects the darker, more introspective tone Jenkins sought to establish in his run. Upon release, the issue was generally appreciated by readers who preferred a deeper focus on Peter Parker's personal life and psychological state over purely spectacle-driven narratives.
