Where it came from
Released in 1996 as the second installment of the PKNA series, this issue followed the successful launch of a bold new direction for Disney Italia’s superhero comic line. The series was created to modernize the character of Donald Duck's alter-ego, Paperinik, by transplanting him from traditional gag-based stories into a complex science-fiction setting inspired by American comic book aesthetics and cinematic storytelling.
The visual identity of this issue was spearheaded by key artists like Alberto Lavoradori, whose experimental and kinetic style helped define the gritty, high-tech atmosphere of the PK universe. The series was designed to appeal to a more mature readership, moving away from simple comedy to explore deeper narrative arcs, and it was eventually met with significant critical acclaim for its innovative layout and darker, more atmospheric tone.
