Where it came from
Paperinik New Adventures, launched in 1996, represented a stylistic departure for Disney Italy by blending traditional comic storytelling with science fiction and superhero tropes. The fifth issue, titled 'Il tempo fugge', was released during the series' experimental early phase, which aimed to attract a more mature, adolescent demographic by introducing complex serialized arcs and a grittier aesthetic compared to the standard Topolino publications.
The visual identity of this era was heavily influenced by Alessandro Barbucci and Barbara Canepa, whose character designs moved away from the classic rubber-hose animation style to a dynamic, manga-influenced aesthetic. This transition, led by editor Ezio Sisto and a team of writers such as Alessandro Sisti, was initially met with hesitation by traditionalist readers but ultimately earned critical acclaim for its narrative depth and innovative layout, solidifying the series as a cult classic in Italian comics.
