Project Monarch #1

Project Monarch #1 was published by Dark Horse Comics during an era when the publisher was aggressively expanding its portfolio of creator-owned, genre-bending science fiction series. The title emerged from a period of experimental storytelling at the imprint, intended to test the boundaries of dark speculative fiction through a focus on atmospheric narrative and unconventional character development. It serves as a representative example of Dark Horse's commitment to independent creators during the mid-2010s.

The visual language of the issue was crafted to emphasize a sense of grounded, gritty realism that stood in contrast to the dominant superhero aesthetics of the time. The creative team aimed for a deliberate, slow-burn pacing that relied heavily on visual storytelling to build suspense. Upon its release, the issue was noted for its distinctive artistic tone and commitment to a serialized, long-form narrative structure that favored mood over traditional action-oriented comic tropes.
