Qīlóngzhū #12

Qīlóngzhū, known internationally as Dragon Ball, began its serialized run in the Japanese anthology Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1984. Written and illustrated by Akira Toriyama, the series was inspired by classical Chinese literature, specifically the 16th-century novel Journey to the West, which Toriyama adapted into a high-energy adventure story centered on the young martial artist Son Goku. Issue 12 reflects the early tone of the series, where Toriyama focused on blending comedic elements with fantasy-based martial arts choreography.

Toriyama’s artistic style during this period is characterized by clean, dynamic line work and an experimental approach to character design that bridged the gap between gag manga and action-oriented storytelling.
