Qīlóngzhū #14

Qīlóngzhū, widely known globally as Dragon Ball, debuted in 1984 within the pages of Weekly Shōnen Jump. Created by Akira Toriyama, the series was inspired by both classical Chinese literature and the action-oriented cinema of the era. Issue #14, published in 1985, belongs to the early chapters of the series, a time when Toriyama was transitioning the story from a loose adaptation of Journey to the West into a more defined martial arts adventure focused on the quest for the Dragon Balls.

Toriyama’s artistic style in these early installments is characterized by a blend of slapstick humor and fluid, energetic paneling. The design of these initial volumes and chapters helped establish the manga's visual language, which emphasized clear character silhouettes and dynamic combat. Upon its release, the series received significant critical attention for its inventiveness and became a cornerstone of the shōnen genre, setting a standard for decades of subsequent action manga.
