Where it came from
Qīlóngzhū, known internationally as Dragon Ball, began its serialized run in Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1984, created by the visionary artist Akira Toriyama. The series evolved from a comedic adventure inspired by the Chinese classic Journey to the West into a defining staple of the shōnen action genre, heavily influencing the pacing and visual language of modern manga through Toriyama’s distinctive, dynamic character designs and clean, kinetic paneling.
Issue #36 represents a segment of the early serialization period, reflecting Toriyama's transition toward the high-stakes tournament arcs that would ultimately cement the series' massive global popularity. During this era, Toriyama’s work was celebrated for its blend of slapstick humor and martial arts choreography, establishing a narrative template that sought to balance accessible character growth with increasingly elaborate battle sequences.
