Where it came from
Qīlóngzhū, internationally known as Dragon Ball, began its serialized run in Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1984, created by the visionary manga artist Akira Toriyama. The series emerged during a golden era of Japanese comics, with Toriyama aiming to blend the fantastical journey tropes of the classical Chinese novel Journey to the West with the high-energy martial arts aesthetic popularized by Jackie Chan films. Issue #39 serves as a chapter within the overarching narrative of the series, reflecting Toriyama's signature style characterized by fluid action sequences and a blend of whimsical character designs with intense, progressive power scaling.
The publication of individual chapters in the magazine was the primary driver for the series' meteoric rise in popularity throughout the 1980s. Toriyama’s design philosophy was centered on readability and kinetic movement, stripping away unnecessary background clutter to focus on the expressive nature of his characters. This specific installment contributed to the sustained momentum that allowed Dragon Ball to become a cornerstone of global pop culture, eventually cementing its place as one of the most influential works in the shōnen genre due to its impact on subsequent generations of illustrators and storytellers.
