Where it came from
Quantum & Woody #9 was published in 1998 as part of the original series from Acclaim Comics' Valiant imprint. Created by Christopher Priest and M.D. Bright, the series was designed as a subversion of the traditional superhero buddy-cop trope, focusing on the dysfunctional relationship between Eric Henderson and Woody Van Celan. The comic is noted for its meta-humor, breaking the fourth wall, and a unique tonal blend of slapstick comedy and genuine character-driven drama.
The aesthetic of the issue reflects the house style of Valiant at the time, prioritizing kinetic layouts and expressive character work by M.D. Bright. As the series progressed, it developed a dedicated cult following for its willingness to satirize the conventions of the comic book industry. While the series faced challenges due to the broader market fluctuations of the late 1990s, the specific writing and artistic chemistry established in these early issues helped cement the title's reputation as a high-water mark for indie-leaning superhero narratives of that era.
