Queen & Country #15

Queen & Country #15, released in 2003, serves as the second installment of the 'Operation: Crystal Ball' story arc within Greg Rucka's critically acclaimed espionage series. Published by Oni Press, the title was created to explore the gritty, bureaucratic, and often clinical reality of modern intelligence work, moving away from the fantastical tropes of the spy genre. The narrative focuses on Tara Chace, an operative for the British Secret Intelligence Service, whose internal and external struggles reflect Rucka’s interest in the psychological toll of state-sanctioned violence.

The visual identity of this issue reflects the series' signature grounded aesthetic, characterized by a clean, minimalist approach to action and character interaction. Brian Hurtt provided the interior art for this arc, emphasizing sharp lines and stark lighting to maintain the tension inherent in Rucka's script. Upon its release, the series was well-regarded for its procedural accuracy and character-driven storytelling, earning a dedicated following among readers who favored mature, realistic portrayals of geopolitical intrigue over traditional superhero fare.
