Queen in Black: Defenders of Light and Dark #1

Queen in Black: Defenders of Light and Dark #1 was published by Marvel Comics in 2021 as part of the broader King in Black event, a massive crossover narrative centered on the ancient deity Knull. The issue served as a connective anthology, designed to explore how various disparate characters across the Marvel Universe reacted to the sudden, suffocating darkness Knull cast over the planet. It functions primarily as a bridge, grounding the cosmic scale of the event in the specific experiences of secondary characters whose stories might otherwise be lost in the main conflict.

The creative direction for this anthology was helmed by a rotating team of writers and artists, including contributors like Jason Loo and Farrell, who focused on capturing the varying tones of horror, action, and survival inherent to the event. The aesthetic reflects the dark, symbiote-heavy visual language defined by Knull’s arrival, utilizing sharp contrast and gritty textures to emphasize the looming threat. Upon its release, the issue was received as a functional companion piece, appreciated by readers for providing depth to the peripheral lore of the King in Black saga rather than driving the core plot forward.
