Ryōma ga Yuku #17

Ryōma ga Yuku, or Ryōma Goes His Way, is a seminal historical novel by Ryōtarō Shiba, first serialized in the Sankei Shimbun between 1963 and 1966. It chronicles the life of Sakamoto Ryōma, a charismatic figure who played a pivotal role in the Meiji Restoration. The publication of the novel in volume format, including individual issues and tankōbon releases, helped cement Ryōma’s status as a folk hero in modern Japan, transforming him from a historical footnote into a cultural icon of progressive reform and national identity.

The serialization and subsequent collected editions were instrumental in defining the genre of Japanese historical fiction. Shiba’s writing style, characterized by detailed research blended with a deeply empathetic portrayal of his subject’s philosophical shift from a traditional samurai to a visionary mediator, resonated with a post-war public seeking narratives of renewal. Issue #17 stands as part of the broader legacy of this epic saga, which remains one of the most widely read and influential literary works in Japanese history.
