Sam Slade Robo-Hunter #21

Sam Slade: Robo-Hunter originated in the pages of the British science fiction anthology 2000 AD, debuting in 1978 as a satirical response to the burgeoning genre of hard-boiled detective fiction. Created by writer John Wagner and artist Ian Gibson, the series followed the misadventures of a cigar-chomping bounty hunter tasked with tracking down malfunctioning robots in a futuristic society. The tone was characterized by a distinct blend of slapstick humor, grit, and cynical social commentary, positioning the titular character as a perpetually unlucky everyman caught in the gears of a high-tech bureaucracy.

Issue 21, part of the character's long-running tenure in 2000 AD, exemplifies the hallmark style established by Gibson. The design philosophy of the series relied on dense, claustrophobic cityscapes and exaggerated mechanical designs that emphasized the absurdity of robot life. Readers and critics at the time largely appreciated the series for its irreverent wit and Gibson's intricate, expressive linework, which helped solidify Sam Slade as a cult favorite among the broader stable of 2000 AD characters.
