Sergio Aragonés Groo the Wanderer #24

Groo the Wanderer #24, published in 1987 by Marvel Comics under the Epic Comics imprint, serves as a quintessential installment in the long-running satirical sword-and-sorcery series created by cartoonist Sergio Aragonés. Developed in collaboration with writer Mark Evanier, the series was conceived as a parody of the popular barbarian tropes popularized by Conan the Conqueror. The design aesthetic is defined entirely by Aragonés' distinct, loose-lined ink style, which allows for dense, slapstick-filled panels that prioritize visual gags and expressive character reactions over traditional comic book realism.

The issue fits into a period when Groo had firmly established itself as a cult favorite for its subversion of hero archetypes, positioning the titular character as a well-meaning but catastrophic force of nature. Critics and readers alike praised the series for its consistent comedic timing and the intricate background details that Aragonés packed into every page. By the time this issue was released, the creative team had solidified a legendary partnership, maintaining a sense of whimsical continuity that distinguished the book from the darker, more serious fantasy titles prevalent in the late 1980s market.
