Seven Wives #1

Seven Wives #1, published by Image Comics in 2021, is the opening installment of an ambitious six-issue miniseries written by Joe Harris and illustrated by Megan Hutchison-Cate. The narrative centers on a high-stakes, dystopian premise in which the world’s wealthiest man, Carter Childress, faces a terminal diagnosis and initiates a competitive, reality-show-style gauntlet for his seven wives, tasking them with a brutal fight for his fortune and legacy. The work reflects contemporary anxieties regarding extreme wealth disparity, the voyeuristic nature of modern media, and the breakdown of traditional marital structures under the pressure of late-stage capitalism.

Megan Hutchison-Cate’s art style for the series is defined by a polished, moody aesthetic that contrasts the opulence of the Childress estate with the grim, clinical nature of the competition. Upon its release, the series was noted for its sharp, satirical tone and its stylistic commitment to the thriller genre. Critics often highlighted how Harris and Hutchison-Cate utilized the comic book medium to craft a heightened, cinematic experience, drawing parallels to popular 'battle royale' media while maintaining a focus on the psychological interplay between the female protagonists.
