Shàngbān Zújīn Tàiláng #10

Shàngbān Zújīn Tàiláng, known internationally as Salaryman Kintaro, was created by manga artist Hiroshi Motomiya and began serialization in 1994. The series emerged during a period of significant economic shifts in Japan, focusing on Kintaro Yajima, a former biker gang leader who enters the corporate world. Issue number 10 represents an early installment in this long-running seinen manga, capturing the character’s transition from a rebellious outsider to an unconventional salaryman navigating the rigid hierarchies of modern business culture.

Motomiya’s design approach for the series emphasizes bold, expressive linework that mirrors the protagonist’s brash and direct personality. The narrative serves as a critique and exploration of the Japanese corporate system, contrasting Kintaro’s street-smart intuition with the bureaucratic complexities of his environment. Upon its release, the series resonated with readers for its unique blend of gritty social commentary and the aspirational spirit of a protagonist who refuses to be constrained by traditional white-collar expectations.
