Where it came from
Shàngbān Zújīn Tàiláng, known internationally as Salaryman Kintaro, was created by manga artist Hiroshi Motomiya and began serialization in 1994. The series follows the life of Kintaro Yajima, a former biker gang leader who transitions into the corporate world after saving a high-ranking executive. Issue number 8 arrived during the height of the manga's popularity in the late 1990s, capturing the zeitgeist of Japan's economic bubble aftermath by juxtaposing blue-collar tenacity with white-collar bureaucracy.
Motomiya’s art style for this series emphasizes a rugged, grounded aesthetic that reflects Kintaro's unconventional approach to business. The series was well-received for its idealistic portrayal of personal integrity within rigid corporate structures, leading to several adaptations, including live-action films and a television drama series. Issue 8 serves as a specific checkpoint in Kintaro's ongoing professional evolution, maintaining the series' signature blend of satirical social commentary and high-stakes drama.
