Shàngbān Zújīn Tàiláng #17

Shàngbān Zújīn Tàiláng, known internationally as Salaryman Kintaro, was created by Hiroshi Motomiya and began its serialization in Weekly Young Jump in 1994. The series follows Kintaro Yajima, a former leader of a notorious motorcycle gang who transitions into the corporate world, using his unconventional past and street-smart perspective to navigate the rigid structures of a traditional Japanese office. Issue 17 represents a segment of the long-running narrative that explores themes of personal transformation and the clash between old-school corporate hierarchy and modern, individualistic initiative.

The character design reflects Motomiya’s signature style of blending gritty, realistic character expressions with the tropes of the seinen manga genre. The series achieved widespread popularity for its aspirational take on the salaryman life, resonating with a demographic navigating Japan's economic shifts in the late 1990s. Its success led to multiple adaptations, including live-action films and a television drama, firmly cementing the series as a staple of business-themed manga that emphasizes resilience and integrity over pure careerism.
