Where it came from
Showcase number 81, published by DC Comics in 1969, served as a launchpad for the character Dolphin, a mysterious undersea heroine. Created by writer and artist Jay Scott Pike, the issue was part of the publisher's long-running experimental anthology series, which was designed to test the viability of new characters and concepts before granting them their own dedicated titles.
The character's design reflects the late 1960s interest in oceanic adventure and archetypal fantasy tropes. Pike's visual approach leaned into the fluid, kinetic aesthetics of the period, though the character did not immediately secure an ongoing solo series. The issue remains a notable entry in the late Silver Age of comics for its attempt to introduce a unique, self-contained heroine during a time of shifting editorial direction at DC.
