Where it came from
Showcase #82 was published by DC Comics in 1969 as part of their long-running anthology series, which served as a testing ground for new characters and concepts. This specific issue is notable for featuring the debut of the Silver Age iteration of Aquaman's sidekick, Aqualad, as a solo lead, following the character's long tenure as a supporting player in the Teen Titans and the Aquaman solo title.
The issue features cover art and interior work that reflects the late-sixties transition in DC Comics' house style, moving toward more dynamic action sequences under the influence of editors like Murray Boltinoff. While Showcase was designed to gauge reader interest for potential ongoing spin-offs, Aqualad’s appearance in this issue functioned more as a standalone spotlight for an established character rather than a launchpad for a new series, and it remains a key piece for collectors of Silver Age DC lore.
