Sicko #1

Sicko #1, published in 1993, emerged from the underground comix scene as a satirical creation by Peter Bagge. Following the conclusion of his seminal series Hate, Bagge transitioned into this new anthology-style format to explore darker, more cynical social commentary. The work is defined by his signature exaggerated, frenetic art style, which serves to amplify the absurdist and often misanthropic nature of the characters inhabiting his fictionalized urban landscapes.

The publication was received as a natural extension of Bagge's sharp-witted critique of contemporary American culture, specifically targeting the anxieties and eccentricities of the early 1990s. Critics of the time praised Bagge for his ability to maintain a consistent satirical voice while shifting between different narrative experiments. It remains a hallmark of the alternative comics movement, noted for its unvarnished portrayal of human flaws and its rejection of mainstream comic conventions.
