Silent Night, Deadly Night: Dark Winter #1

Silent Night, Deadly Night: Dark Winter #1 was released in 2023 as a companion piece to the long-running slasher film franchise that began with the controversial 1984 film. Published by FantaCo, the comic serves as a modern expansion of the lore surrounding Billy Chapman, the traumatized antagonist turned holiday-themed killer. This project was developed to bridge the gap between the cult classic horror aesthetic of the eighties and contemporary graphic storytelling, providing fans with a deeper exploration of the film's grim mythology.

The creative team, including writer MJ Carlson and artist Nelson Dániel, sought to capture the bleak, atmospheric tone of the original cinematic source material while leaning into the visual tropes of independent horror comics. The design focuses on high-contrast shadows and cold, wintry palettes to evoke the isolation of the story's setting. The reception among the dedicated horror fan community was largely positive, specifically praised for its faithful interpretation of the franchise's dark tone and its ability to modernize the slasher villain’s backstory.
