Spider-Woman #23

Spider-Woman #23, released in early 1980, belongs to the original Jessica Drew series that launched in 1978. During this era, the title was attempting to carve out a distinct identity for the character, often leaning into occult and detective-noir themes rather than traditional superhero tropes. This specific issue reflects a transitional period for the series, which was frequently tasked with balancing its own narrative direction against the broader editorial mandates of the Marvel Universe at the time.

The cover art and interior illustrations from this period of the series are indicative of the house style maintained by Marvel during the late Bronze Age. Artists working on the title often utilized the dramatic, high-contrast imagery typical of horror-influenced comics to highlight Jessica Drew’s mysterious past. While not a landmark issue in terms of major character revisions, it remains a sought-after piece for collectors focusing on the initial run of the character’s complex publishing history.
