Star Spangled War Stories #179

Star Spangled War Stories #179 was published by DC Comics in 1974, emerging during a period when the publisher was shifting its focus from traditional combat tales toward more inventive and genre-bending narratives. This specific issue is notable for its inclusion in the 'Enemy Ace' series, featuring the legendary German pilot Hans von Hammer. The story was crafted during a time when DC editors were encouraging creators to imbue war comics with deeper psychological complexity rather than simple patriotic glorification.

The character of Enemy Ace was created by writer Robert Kanigher and artist Joe Kubert, who sought to portray the internal conflicts of an honorable soldier fighting for the wrong side during World War I. Issue #179 reflects the distinct, gritty artistic sensibilities that defined the title, with atmospheric work that emphasized the haunting loneliness of aerial combat. While the series was a staple of the Bronze Age of comics, it remains highly regarded by collectors today for its mature tone and technical excellence in illustration.
