Star Spangled War Stories #204

Star Spangled War Stories #204 was published by DC Comics in 1977 as part of a long-running anthology series that originally debuted in the early 1950s. During the mid-1970s, the title was famously centered on the adventures of the Unknown Soldier, a master of disguise and psychological warfare operating behind enemy lines during World War II. This specific era of the title is frequently associated with the creative stewardship of writer David Michelinie and artist Gerry Talaoc, whose work contributed to the grit and atmospheric tension that defined the character's stories during this period.

The design of the Unknown Soldier during this era emphasized the character's haunting appearance, with his heavily bandaged face serving as a visual centerpiece for covers and interior panels alike. DC Comics aimed to distinguish the series from typical war-themed anthologies by leaning into espionage, mystery, and the internal struggle of a soldier who has lost his own identity. The series was well-regarded by readers of the time for its unconventional protagonist and its willingness to explore the darker, more psychological facets of combat, cementing its place as a standout entry in DC's late Bronze Age war catalog.
