Where it came from
Suicide Squad #43, published in July 1990, was part of the original ongoing series written by John Ostrander. This era of the title is renowned for its gritty, complex morality and its focus on underutilized DC Comics villains forced into government-sanctioned missions. The issue features interior art by Geof Isherwood, continuing the book's reputation for high-stakes storytelling within the DC Universe.
The creative team, spearheaded by Ostrander and editor Robert Greenberger, designed this run to subvert traditional superhero tropes by emphasizing the expendability of the protagonists. By 1990, the series had established a dedicated cult following that appreciated the dark, military-thriller tone. It remains a hallmark of late 1980s and early 1990s comic book writing, celebrated for character depth rather than traditional heroic archetypes.
