Super Friends #46

Super Friends issue 46, published by DC Comics in July 1981, originated during a decade-long initiative to align comic book storytelling with the popular Saturday morning animated series produced by Hanna-Barbera. Written by E. Nelson Bridwell and featuring art by Ramona Fradon, the series was designed to be accessible to younger readers while maintaining continuity with the established DC Universe. These titles often prioritized lighthearted adventures that emphasized team dynamics over the darker, more complex narratives found in DC’s primary superhero lines at the time.

The creative direction for this era of the series leaned into the unique roster of the Super Friends, utilizing characters like the Wonder Twins and Wendy and Marvin alongside staples such as Superman and Batman. Ramona Fradon’s distinct, clean artistic style was particularly well-regarded for its clarity and expressive character work, which effectively captured the spirit of the television show while grounding it in the traditional comic format. While the series was often viewed as a companion piece to the animation, it is now remembered as a notable chapter in the history of all-ages comic publishing.
