Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes #236

Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes #236 was published in February 1978, serving as a significant turning point for the long-running DC Comics series. This era of the title was defined by the transition of the Legion from a supporting feature into a powerhouse franchise, reflecting the creative efforts of writer Paul Levitz and artist James Sherman. At this time, DC was experimenting with larger page counts and more complex, interwoven story arcs, and this issue is notably remembered for the departure of the character Wildfire as the group's leader, marking a shift in the team's internal power dynamics.

The cover and interior art by James Sherman captured the late-seventies aesthetic of DC, blending space-opera scale with character-driven drama. Sherman’s approach to the Legion leaned into a more grounded, sleek aesthetic that contrasted with the more whimsical interpretations of earlier decades. The issue was received well by contemporary readers who were invested in the maturing narrative direction of the Legion, which had become one of DC's most consistent and critically regarded properties during the late 1970s.
