Superman #349

Superman #349, published by DC Comics in July 1980, is notable for its exploration of the 'What If' narrative structure within the Silver and Bronze Age comic book traditions. The issue features a story titled 'The Man Who Murdered the Earth,' written by Cary Bates with interior art by Curt Swan and cover art by José Luis García-López. This period of Superman comics focused heavily on high-concept science fiction premises and complex internal monologues that challenged the boundaries of the character's traditional morality.

Curt Swan, the definitive Superman artist of his generation, provided the visual grounding for this era, while José Luis García-López became widely celebrated for his definitive style guide illustrations that standardized the appearance of DC characters for licensing. The reception of issue #349 reflects the interest in creative, experimental storytelling that characterized Cary Bates' long tenure on the title. It stands as a representative example of the late Bronze Age approach to DC's flagship character, balancing imaginative plots with the refined, clean aesthetic that defined the company's house style at the time.
