Where it came from
Published in 1961 by DC Comics, Superman Annual #2 belongs to a period of the Silver Age of comic books when the publisher frequently released oversized annual issues. These compilations were designed to offer readers a mix of new material and reprinted classics, serving as a value-add for fans during a time when the character's mythos was rapidly expanding under the editorial guidance of Mort Weisinger.
The issue features work from prominent creators of the era, including writer Jerry Siegel and artist Curt Swan, the latter of whom is widely regarded as the definitive Superman artist of the mid-20th century. Their collaboration aimed to maintain the whimsical yet moralistic tone characteristic of the Metropolis adventures, with the issue being well-received by contemporary readers for its generous page count and focus on iconic secondary characters like Supergirl and Krypto.
