Superman Annual: Year One Thousand #1

Superman Annual: Year One Thousand #1 was published by DC Comics in 1996 as part of a line of annuals that experimented with alternative historical and futuristic interpretations of iconic characters. This specific issue served as an Elseworlds tale, a DC imprint dedicated to stories that take place outside the established canonical continuity, allowing creators to explore how a character like Superman would function in radically different cultural or temporal settings.

The issue was written by Karl Kesel with artwork by Peter Krause and Jose Marzan Jr. The creative team leaned into an aesthetic inspired by the transition between the medieval period and the dawn of the second millennium, reimagining the Superman mythos through the lens of ancient prophecy and folklore. It was received as a stylistic departure for the character, noted by fans of the era for its focus on atmospheric world-building rather than the standard superhero tropes prevalent in the mid-nineties.
