Supreme Power #9

Supreme Power issue 9 was released in 2004 as part of the Marvel MAX imprint, an editorial line designed for mature readers. Written by J. Michael Straczynski and illustrated by Gary Frank, the series served as a cynical, grounded reimagining of the classic Squadron Supreme characters. The creators intended to explore how super-powered individuals would genuinely interact with the political and social structures of the modern world, moving away from traditional superhero archetypes toward a more noir-inflected realism.

The art by Gary Frank was noted for its meticulous detail and expressive realism, which helped establish the somber tone of the series. The narrative in this specific issue centers on the complex internal conflicts of characters like Hyperion and Nighthawk as they navigate the moral ambiguities of their roles. Upon its release, the series was received with critical acclaim for its sophisticated subversion of established comic tropes and its willingness to tackle darker, more nuanced themes.
