Where it came from
Swamp Thing #1 was published by DC Comics in October 1971, marking the debut of the titular character in a standalone series set in the early 20th century. Conceived by writer Len Wein and artist Bernie Wrightson, the character emerged during a period of resurgence for horror-themed comics, drawing heavy inspiration from golden age tropes while grounding the narrative in a more atmospheric, gothic sensibility.
Bernie Wrightson’s intricate, brooding illustrations defined the visual identity of the series, earning widespread critical acclaim for their detailed line work and masterful use of shadow. The creative team aimed to blend traditional superhero tropes with the moody, introspective tone of horror anthologies, a stylistic departure that resonated with readers and established the character as a cornerstone of DC's darker supernatural storytelling.
